The Flag of Mother Russia
The Russian flag, sometimes called the Imperial flag, was adopted on August 21, 1991. The flag consists of three horizontal bands of white (top), blue (middle), and red (bottom). While the colors do not have an official, Russians say the white represents peace, liberty, or innocence, the blue represents faith, loyalty, or the Blessed Virgin, and the red represents energy, power, or blood.
This particular design of the flag is over 300 years old and was first used by Peter the Great. This flag was actually used from May 7, 1883 until November 1917 when the communist Bolshevik revolution occurred. When the communist regime fell, the tri-color flag was made the national flag yet again. Since 1994, Russia has celebrated a national "Day of State Flag," which they have on August 21st each year.
