The Russian Federation is governed under the nation's current constitution of 1993, as amended. The head of state is President Vladimir Putin, and the Russian president is eligible to serve for two six-year terms. The State Duma has 450 members, and these seats are distributed proportionally among those parties whose national vote are at least 7%. Members of the Duma serve five-year terms.
The Civic Chamber investigated government officials and advises on national legislation. Its 126 members are appointed by the president or chosen by members of the chamber from among prominent individuals not within the government, and the members serve two-year terms. Mother Russia is divided into 46 region, 21 ethnically non-Russian republics, 4 autonomous national ares, 9 largely Russian territories, the federal cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, and one autonomous region.
